Metafields

Create the exact metafields read by the shared codebase and distinguish built-in keys, configurable keys, and data supplied by Shopify or an app.

Create a product metafield and enter its value

A definition creates the field for every product. Its value is then entered separately on each relevant product.

  1. 01

In Shopify admin, open Settings → Metafields and metaobjects.

  2. 02

Under Metafield definitions, choose Products. Choose Variants only when the code explicitly expects a variant metafield.

  3. 03

    Click Add definition.

  4. 04

Enter a readable name, such as “Product features”.

  5. 05

Under Namespace and key, enter the exact key expected by the theme. For product_features, the complete value must be custom.product_features. Do not replace custom or translate the key.

  6. 06

Click Select type, then choose the type documented on this page. Example: List of single-line text values for custom.product_features.

  7. 07

Keep the definition pinned if you want it readily available on product pages, then save.

  8. 08

Open Products and select the product to complete. Scroll to Metafields or Custom data.

  9. 09

Open the new field, enter or select its value, then save the product.

  10. 10

Repeat for every product that should display the information, then check a real storefront page.

Metafields to create with these exact names

These keys are read directly by the shared codebase. Another key will not be recognized unless a fallback is explicitly listed.

Data not to recreate as custom fields

Product reviewsreviews.rating · reviews.rating_count

The Glass Product Card and product page read these standard metafields. They should normally be populated by a compatible Shopify reviews app, not entered manually.

Shopify category attributesproduct.metafields.shopify

They come from the category assigned to the product. Select the correct Shopify category and complete its attributes; do not create a custom namespace called shopify.

Metafields configured in the editor

  • 01

The product page Category metafields block accepts a namespace and up to four keys, so it does not depend on a fixed custom key.

  • 02

The Comparison Builder can use a metafield as a criterion. Every compared product must use the same namespace, key, and data type.

  • 03

Blog Grid and Blog Discovery can rank articles using a likes counter. The article namespace and key are entered in the section settings.
